Dr. Bethany Bracken Delivers Keynote Address at BIOSTEC 2017

Dr. Bethany Bracken, a senior scientist at Charles River Analytics Inc., will deliver a keynote address at BIOSTEC 2017, the 10th International Joint Conference on Biomedical Engineering Systems and Technologies. The conference will take place from February 21 to 23, 2017, in Porto, Portugal. Dr. Bracken will present an unobtrusive system to measure, assess, and predict cognitive workload in real-world environments.

“I am honored to present at a conference that includes scientists, researchers, and medical professionals from such a broad range of fields,” said Dr. Bracken. “It is incredibly important to encourage cross-discipline and cross-profession dialogue in order to bring the most cutting edge research into clinical practice. I am excited to talk about several of Charles River Analytics’ efforts to sense and assess human states, such as  cognitive workload, in groups ranging from laboratory participants to professionals going about their normal activities.”

Dr. Bracken will present the following efforts at BIOSTEC:

  • ADAPTER – a toolkit for the US Air Force that models individual and team cognitive state
  • CAPT PICARD – a system for NASA that measures, assesses, and predicts cognitive workload to assist astronauts or mission control in responding more effectively
  • MEDIC– a system for the US Army that automatically senses indicators of cognitive workload to augment training
  • Sherlock™ – an open and extensible software and hardware platform that enables users to rapidly prototype applications that collect, analyze, visualize, and reason about human physiological, neurological, and behavioral states

Dr. Bethany Bracken, is a Senior Scientist at Charles River Analytics. Throughout her career, Dr. Bracken has used a variety of behavioral, physiological, cognitive, molecular, and neuroimaging methodologies in both humans and animals to answer questions about the neurobiology of behavior. At Charles River, she currently works on projects using neurophysiological and physiological sensing methods to assess human states such as stress, focused attention, and cognitive workload and to predict upcoming performance deficits to allow time to enact augmentation strategies to optimize that performance. Dr. Bracken has a B.S. in Psychology from Clarion University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Brandeis University. Before joining Charles River Analytics, Dr. Bracken completed a postdoctoral fellowship, quickly followed with a promotion to the faculty level, in the department of Psychiatry at McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
