MAGPIE-AVIONICS

Adaptive and immersive, game-based avionics training

KWYN Products-White

Avionics training of the future

Introducing MAGPIE Avionics, the revolutionary training solution that combines immersive game-based technology with aircraft maintenance procedures. Students learn in highly interactive virtual environments, providing nearly realistic experiences with avionics systems. Powered by our intelligent tutoring system (ITS), users receive real-time performance assessments and personalized training that adapts to their individual needs. ITS also helps identify skill gaps, making it an efficient way to improve current skills. Traditional avionics training methods are costly and time-consuming, MAGPIE Avionics provides an affordable, powerful, and personalized approach.

MAGPIE Avionics has already been deployed at Sheppard Air Force Base, where instructors and students are actively using it for F-15E avionics maintenance training.

“MAGPIE Avionics dynamically adapts both the scenario and the mechanics of the game to maximize training effectiveness over time, providing individual aircraft maintainers with customized training for key tasks. This adaptation is based on the trainee’s performance, instructional design theory, and motivational theory; it helps to ensure that the trainee has a beneficial and appropriate training experience when instructor guidance is limited.”

The MAGPIE Framework
(now KWYN Immersive)

MAGPIE Avionics is built on the MAGPIE Framework (now KWYN Immersive), which integrates efficient content authoring tools, and advanced models of trainee skill and motivation. It has a dynamic game adaptation engine which delivers personalized, responsive training that adapts to an individual’s learning needs, performance, and instructor guidance.

Sean Guarino, the principal investigator of the project at Charles River, explained, “The MAGPIE Framework promises to reduce training costs in two ways. First, it provides rapid and intuitive authoring that allows course designers to construct new training content with limited software engineering support. Second, it reduces the cost of training exercises by allowing instructors to manage large classes in a virtual maintenance trainer, reducing necessary time and potential costly errors on live vehicles and partial task trainers.”

Powerful, personalized, and efficient

MAGPIE Avionics is a powerful and efficient solution for game-based training for maintenance personnel. The combination of its various components allows the Air Force to harness the full potential of this approach and provide a more personalized and effective training experience. The benefits of MAGPIE are not limited to the Air Force, as it can also be useful for other agencies that use computer-controlled immersive scenarios for training such as air traffic controllers, emergency responders, and medical response teams. Overall, MAGPIE Avionics has the potential to lower costs and improve skills for various personnel in the field of maintenance, making it a valuable asset to any organization.
