Passport Systems, Inc. of North Billerica, MA, and its exclusive teaming partner Charles River Analytics Inc. of Cambridge, MA, jointly announce a prime contract competitively awarded to Passport Systems by the US Department of Homeland Security, Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DHS/DNDO) under the Radiation Awareness and Interdiction Network Advanced Technology Demonstration (RAIN ATD) program. As part of this program, Passport Systems and Charles River will design, construct, and test a highly agile advanced radiation detection portal system. Under the terms of the contract, the team will perform the preliminary design phase of the program, which is expected to be completed in February 2015. With all program phases exercised, the total contract value is close to $6.9 million.
Passport Systems will apply its expertise in radiation detection and identification and its experience in data fusion across multi-sensor networked systems. Charles River will leverage its experience in video-based analytics and its object detection and tracking software. The goal is to combine the technology and experience of both companies to develop and demonstrate a robust, operational system with a high probability of detecting vehicle-borne radiation sources at a very low false alarm rate. The envisioned system will monitor vehicle routes for potentially hazardous radiological sources to support interdiction of suspect vehicles without interfering with the flow of traffic.
Dr. Robert J. Ledoux, President & CEO of Passport Systems, stated, “We take pride in receiving this contract award from DHS/DNDO and recognize the importance of this work in helping to develop solutions to secure people, cities and other important infrastructure.”
Mr. Rich Wronski, Vice President of Charles River Analytics’ Sensor Processing and Networking Division, welcomed the opportunity to partner on this critical program, adding,
“We are excited to apply the state-of-the-art video analytics capabilities offered in our VisionKit® software tool to the challenge of protecting the US homeland.”
