Charles River Analytics to Develop Comms Assessment Tool for US Navy Training Instructors

VOCCALS
During live, virtual, and constructive (LVC) training exercises, warfighters communicate over multiple audio channels from different platforms, generating a massive amount of information for instructors to monitor and interpret.

Charles River Analytics was awarded a $140K contract from the Naval Air Warfare Center to develop Voice Observation for Cross-Platform Communications Assessment and Learning Support (VOCCALS). During training, VOCCALS will analyze cross-platform comms against expected skills and behaviors, automatically identifying meaningful events that instructors can use to review and report on communications performance.

VOCCALS uses speech recognition and semantic analysis components to parse and assess these communications, and summarizes the results in an intuitive interface.

“We’re excited to develop these tools that will make it faster and easier for instructors to identify, understand, and debrief key learning events,” said Susan Latiff, Principal Investigator on the project and a Cognitive Scientist at Charles River Analytics.
